Relatives of the Ostrich

There are many relatives to the bird this blog is named after in the ratite bird family (a family of large flightless birds). This group consists of:

The Rhea:

The Emu:

The Moa (extinct 1500 CE):

The Elephant Bird (extinct 1500 CE):

(Elephant Bird Egg (left) compared to ostrich egg (right) compared to hand):

The Kiwi:

All the preceding were related to the beloved Struthio Camelus (Ostrich).

This has been your daily dose of ostrich education.

  1. Great site and info!
I just think you should also include the Cassowary (native to N.E. Australia and New Guinea) as it ia a Ratite too!
